End-to-end Telegram funnel tracking

Click, bot start, join, message and deposit. Each stage is measured and attributed to the campaign that produced it.

Why a single conversion figure is not enough

A campaign that reports twelve deposits may appear healthy until you see that it required nine hundred clicks. The cause could be a weak ad, people leaving before Telegram opened, members who joined and never engaged, or an offer that failed at the final step. A single total cannot distinguish between these. A funnel view can, because it shows the conversion rate between each pair of stages.

The stages to measure

  • Click: the person tapped the ad and reached your tracking link.
  • Bot start or join: they opened your bot or joined the group. Meta's own reporting does not extend beyond this point.
  • Conversation: they sent a message to your admin or bot, a considerably stronger signal of intent than a join.
  • Offer click: they followed a tracked link inside Telegram.
  • Deposit or purchase: the revenue event, recorded with its value.

Setting it up

  • Give each ad a Tellmetric tracking link. The redirect records the click with its fbclid, UTM values and any sub-IDs before sending the person to Telegram.
  • Connect your bot. Joins and bot starts are matched to the click through a single-use invite link or a deep-link payload, so the match is exact rather than based on timing.
  • Messages to the admin account are recorded as conversation events automatically.
  • Report deposits through the postback URL or the event API, using the click ID you already have. Value and currency are included.

Illustrative example: a tracked funnel

Campaign "VIP Signals" over one week: 2,300 clicks, 1,410 bot starts (61%), 880 joins (38% of clicks), 190 conversations and 41 deposits worth €6,150. The largest drop occurs between bot start and join, which indicates a problem with the invite step rather than the ad. Without stage-level data, the creative would likely have been blamed.

Common mistakes

  • Sending ads directly to a t.me link. No click is recorded, so the funnel has no first stage.
  • Using the same invite link for every campaign. All joins then fall into a single unattributed pool.
  • Treating joins as the final conversion. A join that never leads to a deposit is a cost, not a result.
  • Not reporting deposits to Meta. Without them, the algorithm continues to optimise for clicks, the only signal it receives.

How Tellmetric handles it

Every event carries the campaign, ad set, creative and sub-ID values from the original click, so the dashboard's funnel-by-campaign table shows each stage side by side. Join cohorts follow the same people week by week to show which campaigns produce members who continue to deposit. Conversions are delivered to Meta as standard events, and to TikTok, Snapchat, Reddit, Spotify or Google Ads if you advertise there, with deduplication so that no event is counted twice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I define my own stages?

The funnel is built from the events you send. Deposit, FTD, lead and registration statuses are supported natively, and any event you post to the event API is included as well.

Does it work with several funnels at once?

Yes. Each tracking link and each campaign is reported separately. The Agency plan adds up to five workspaces for running separate funnels or clients side by side.

Do I need a landing page?

No. The tracking link records the click on its own. A landing page with tracker.js adds visit data and browser identifiers, but it is optional.

Is stage data useful with small budgets?

Yes, arguably more so. When budget is limited, identifying the stage with the largest drop-off is the most direct way to reduce wasted spend.
