UTM tracking for Telegram ads

UTMs identify the campaign a click came from, but not what that person did in Telegram. Combined with a click id and server-side storage, they form the basis of reliable reporting.

Why tagging matters more for Telegram than for a website

On a website, analytics referrers and landing-page reports provide a fallback. In a Telegram funnel the destination is a chat, and Telegram discards everything in the URL except the start parameter. Campaign information that is not captured and stored before the hand-off is lost. UTMs record the source at the only point where it can still be read.

Recommended parameters

  • utm_source: the network, for example facebook, instagram or tiktok.
  • utm_medium: the buying model, usually paid or cpc.
  • utm_campaign: the campaign, ideally spelled exactly as it appears in the ad platform.
  • utm_content: the creative or ad, so you can compare creatives by actual joins.
  • utm_term: optional; useful for audience or placement labels.
  • Platform click ids appended automatically, such as fbclid for Meta, ttclid for TikTok and gclid for Google. These are required to report a conversion back to the platform, so they should never be removed.

A setup that preserves data through the hand-off

  • Point the ad to a URL you control: a landing page with the tracker script, or a Tellmetric tracking link used directly.
  • Add UTMs through the ad platform's URL parameter field so that they are consistent across every ad in the campaign.
  • Capture UTMs and the click id on arrival and store them server-side under a visitor id and a click id.
  • Send the visitor to Telegram with a link that carries the click id, never a plain t.me address.
  • When a join, message or deposit is observed, resolve the click id and report the conversion with the stored campaign data.

A consistent naming scheme

Use lowercase names with hyphens, and include market, offer and month in the campaign name, for example nl-vip-signals-2026-09. Record the creative angle in utm_content, for example hook-a-testimonial. When the funnel report groups by campaign, names sort and read clearly, and no separate lookup table is needed to identify a campaign such as Campaign 14 copy 2.

Example URL

https://go.yourdomain.com/go/t/vip-nl?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=nl-vip-signals-2026-09&utm_content=hook-a-testimonial&fbclid={{fbclid}}

Meta inserts the click id when the ad is served. The tracking link records all parameters, generates its own click id and redirects to your bot or group.

Limitations of UTMs

  • They cannot identify which Telegram account belongs to which click. That requires a per-visitor link.
  • They cannot record anything that happens after the redirect.
  • They cannot be used to report a conversion to an ad platform. Conversion APIs match on click ids and hashed identifiers, not on UTM values.
  • They do not persist over weeks. Cookies and local storage remain in the browser, while the deposit happens in an app.

Common failures

  • Sending traffic directly to a t.me link, which discards every parameter immediately.
  • Sharing one invite link across all campaigns, which prevents campaign comparison after the click.
  • UTM campaign names that differ from the names in the ad platform, so the two reports cannot be reconciled.
  • Capturing UTMs but not the click id. Your own reports work, but there is nothing to send back to the ad platform.

How Tellmetric handles it

Tellmetric's tracker script and tracking links capture UTMs, sub-ids and platform click ids together, store them with a visitor id and a click id, and carry that click id into Telegram through single-use invites and bot deep links. The dashboard's funnel view groups clicks, joins, messages and deposits by utm_campaign. Every conversion sent to Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, Reddit, Spotify or Google Ads is matched on the original click id rather than on the UTM values.

Frequently asked questions

Do UTMs affect what Meta receives?

No. Meta matches on fbc, fbp and hashed user data. UTMs are used for your own reporting.

Can I use sub-ids from an affiliate tracker instead?

Yes. Tellmetric captures sub1 to sub9 alongside UTMs and returns your click id in postbacks.

What if one ad is missing a UTM?

The click is still recorded and remains attributable through the click id. It appears under an empty campaign in the funnel table.
