Join tracking

Track every Telegram group join back to its source

Tellmetric issues one invite link per click, so each new member is recorded with the campaign that brought them.

Why joins are anonymous by default

A standard Telegram invite link is the same for everyone who uses it. If the same link appears in three ad sets, a newsletter and a partner's channel, every resulting join looks identical in the member list. The group grows, but the source of each member cannot be determined.

What join tracking provides

  • Each join mapped to a campaign, ad set and creative.
  • Cost per join calculated from actual joins rather than link clicks.
  • Paid, partner and organic joins reported separately.
  • A join event delivered to the ad platform, so campaigns can optimise for members rather than clicks.

How the matching works

  • The ad points to a Tellmetric join link. The redirect records the click and forwards the visitor to your bot.
  • The bot creates a single-member invite link for that click and sends it to the visitor.
  • When the visitor joins, Telegram reports which invite link was used. Each link belongs to exactly one click, so attribution is a direct lookup rather than an estimate.
  • For groups that require join approval, the join request carries the same information and is processed in the same way.

Because each link is single-use, a member who forwards it cannot create a false attribution. Anyone who receives a forwarded link goes through a new flow and is recorded as an unattributed join.

Example

Illustrative example: a creative test runs three videos against the same audience. After one week, the join report shows 312, 140 and 98 joins at €1.90, €4.10 and €5.80 per join. Click-through rates were nearly identical across the three, so only the join data identified the strongest creative.

Common mistakes

  • Linking ads directly to a t.me invite. No click is recorded, so the join cannot be attributed.
  • Reusing one invite link across campaigns and attempting to split joins by timestamp afterwards.
  • Not granting the bot admin rights. Without them, it cannot create invite links or receive join events.
  • Reporting only the join. Without deposit events, the ad platform optimises for people who join but do not convert further.

How Tellmetric handles join tracking

Tellmetric issues the per-click invite, monitors the group for the join, and records a Joiner event with the click's fbclid, browser identifiers and campaign values. The event is sent to Meta as CompleteRegistration with deduplication, and to TikTok as Subscribe when TikTok is connected. The dashboard reports joins by campaign, and cohort reports show what those members did afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work for private groups?

Yes. Private groups and channels are the standard case, because the bot issues the invite.

Do members notice any difference?

They receive a personal invite from the bot instead of a shared link. The rest of the experience is unchanged.

What about people who are already members?

An existing member does not generate a join event. Members leaving the group are recorded separately as a negative signal.

Can organic joins be attributed?

Only joins that come through a tracked link carry a source. All other joins are counted as unattributed, which provides a useful baseline.
