Facebook ads for Telegram groups, measured per member

Meta provides reach and targeting, and Telegram provides an engaged audience. Tellmetric connects the two by recording which ad produced each new member.

Why Facebook and Instagram suit group growth

Meta lets you target by interest, behaviour and lookalike audience and place a "Join on Telegram" call to action in front of that audience with little lead time. Once people join the group, you control what they see: there is no feed algorithm between your posts and your members.

  • Signal and analysis groups in trading, crypto and sports
  • Private communities attached to a course, coaching programme or membership
  • Deal and product-release channels for e-commerce brands
  • Support and onboarding groups for SaaS products and apps

Where Meta's measurement stops

Meta records the click on your ad and nothing after it. Ads Manager cannot see whether that person opened Telegram, joined the group or left at the invite screen. As a result, the delivery algorithm optimises for clicks, and campaigns that generate inexpensive clicks often produce few members.

How Tellmetric attributes each join

  • A tracking link per ad. Your ad points at a /go/t/ link instead of a raw t.me URL. The click is stored with its fbclid, UTMs and sub-ids before the redirect.
  • A single-use invite per visitor. The bot issues an invite link that admits one person, so each join is matched to exactly one click without relying on time windows.
  • Joins are reported to Meta. Each join is delivered to the Conversions API as CompleteRegistration with the original click id attached, so the campaign can optimise for members.
  • Deposits are attributed to the same click. A postback from your platform or tracker marks the member as a depositor, and Meta receives a Purchase event with value and currency.

Illustrative example: one week of tracked spend

Illustrative figures. Two ad sets each spend €40 a day. Set A receives 610 clicks and 212 joins; set B receives 890 clicks and 96 joins. On clicks alone, B appears stronger. Join data shows that A costs €1.32 per member and B costs €2.92, and only A produced depositors. Without join tracking, budget would move to the weaker ad set.

Common mistakes that waste budget

  • Sending traffic directly to a t.me link, which discards the click id before it can be recorded
  • Optimising for link clicks or landing page views instead of a Telegram event
  • Using one shared invite link for every campaign, which makes joins impossible to compare
  • Not reporting deposits, so Meta optimises for members who never pay

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a landing page?

No. The tracking link can redirect directly into Telegram. A landing page with tracker.js also captures fbp and fuller UTM data, which improves match quality, but it is optional.

Does this work for channels as well as groups?

Yes. Channels use the same invite-link flow, and join requests are attributed as well.

What does Meta receive?

The event name and time, the fbc built from the click id, hashed identifiers, IP address and user agent, and an event id that prevents double counting.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The Free plan covers 1,000 tracked users a month with Meta reporting. No card is required.
