Two different questions behind "Telegram pixel"
The phrase covers two needs that have nothing to do with each other:
- "I buy ads on Telegram's own ad network. How do I measure what they bring?" That is what the Telegram Ads Pixel Tag is for, as long as the ad sends people to a website you own.
- "I buy ads on Meta, TikTok or Google that send people into a Telegram group, channel or bot. Where do I put the pixel?" There is nowhere to put one. Telegram is an app, not a page you control, and no pixel from any platform runs inside it. That case needs server-side tracking, described in the second half of this guide.
What the Telegram Ads Pixel Tag is
The Pixel Tag is a JavaScript snippet that Telegram Ads gives advertisers for their own websites. You create it in the ad account under Manage Events, place the base code in the head of every page of the site, and add event code where the actions you care about happen, such as a sign-up or a purchase. There is one Pixel Tag per ad account.
Once installed it records visits to the site from Telegram ads and the events you marked, and the ad account shows them as results and cost per action. Telegram processes this data anonymously and in aggregate: you see counts per ad, not individual visitors. Third-party setup guides describe around nineteen event types, among them page views, leads, sign-ups and purchases, and an event log in the ad account that shows the last few hours of activity. The pixel is not available to advertisers in every country, and an ad's conversion event cannot be changed after the ad is saved.
What it cannot see
- Anything inside Telegram. A join to a channel, a message to a bot, a Stars payment, a Mini App action: none of these happen on your website, so the pixel never fires. An ad that points at a channel or a bot produces no pixel data at all.
- Individual people. The data is aggregated. You get "this ad produced 40 sign-ups", not "this person came from this ad". There is no identifier you could use to follow a visitor into a chat later.
- Ads bought elsewhere. The pixel measures Telegram Ads only. A visitor from a Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or Google ad is invisible to it, and it sends nothing to those platforms.
- Optimisation. Reseller guides note that Telegram Ads does not yet optimise delivery towards pixel events the way Meta optimises towards Conversions API events; the pixel reports, it does not steer.
So the Pixel Tag answers one question well: which Telegram ads bring people who act on my website. It answers nothing about the community the ad was meant to fill.
When the ad leads into Telegram: tracking without a pixel
For ads that send people to a group, channel or bot, the measurement has to come from inside Telegram, through a bot you add to your own community. Telegram tells an admin bot who joined and through which invite link, and tells a bot which start code a person pressed Start with. Those two facts are what a pixel would have given you on a website:
- The ad points at a tracking link instead of the public t.me address. The link records the click, with the platform's click id when there is one (Meta's fbclid, TikTok's ttclid, Google's gclid), and your campaign parameters.
- The visitor is sent into Telegram through something that belongs to that one click: a single-use invite link for a group or channel, or a bot deep link with a start code.
- When the person joins or presses Start, your bot reports it, and the join is matched to the click without any guessing from timing or IP addresses.
- The join, the message and any later deposit are sent to the platform that showed the ad, through Meta's Conversions API, TikTok's Events API and their equivalents, with the original click id attached.
This is what Tellmetric does. Nothing is installed inside Telegram; the bot is yours, added to your group or channel as an admin with one right. The full chain is described in Telegram conversion tracking and the no-pixel case in Telegram tracking without a pixel.
Using both
A funnel that has a website and a Telegram community can use both tools side by side. The Pixel Tag reports website actions to Telegram Ads; Tellmetric's one-line landing-page script captures the click identifiers of the other platforms on the same page and passes them to the tracking links behind your "Open in Telegram" buttons. The two scripts do not interfere: one talks to Telegram Ads, the other to the tracking link.
For ads bought on Telegram Ads that point straight at a channel or bot, neither tool receives a click id, because Telegram adds none. There the measurement is per creative: one tracking link per ad, named after it, so that joins and deposits are counted per creative. That setup is covered in Telegram Ads conversion tracking.
Frequently asked
Is there a Telegram pixel like the Meta Pixel?
Telegram Ads has a Pixel Tag for websites. It records visits and events on your own site from Telegram ads, in aggregate. It does not run inside Telegram and does not measure ads bought on other platforms.
Can the Pixel Tag track channel subscribers or bot starts?
No. It covers click-throughs to external websites only. Joins, messages and payments inside Telegram are measured through a bot in your community, not through a pixel.
Can I send Telegram joins to the Meta Pixel?
Not to the Pixel, which runs in a browser. Joins reach Meta through the Conversions API, server to server, with the click id the person arrived with. That is the route Tellmetric uses for Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, Reddit, Spotify and X.
Does the Pixel Tag work in every country?
Telegram makes it available to advertisers in certain countries only; check Manage Events in your ad account.
Do I need the Pixel Tag to use Tellmetric?
No. Tellmetric needs a bot in your group or channel and a tracking link in the ad. The Pixel Tag is useful only if you buy Telegram Ads that lead to your website.
